Five reasons to start volunteering
Let’s explore some of the rewards of volunteering and why it is worth embracing:
- Make a meaningful impact: if you start volunteering, you will have a unique opportunity to directly improve or enhance the lives of others. Whether you choose to tutor young children or support your local food bank, every act of volunteering has the potential to make a significant difference. By dedicating time and skills, we can uplift communities, empower individuals, and inspire positive change.
- Develop and acquire new skills: Volunteering is a powerful tool for personal growth. It allows us to step out of our comfort zones, learn something new, and gain valuable experiences. Volunteering often presents opportunities to develop skills such as teamworking, problem-solving and confidence, which can make us feel good and benefit all aspects of our life.
- See things differently: Volunteering gives us an insight into the lives and challenges of others, allowing us to see things from a different perspective, show empathy and compassion and expand our view of the world. Through interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds, we gain a deeper understanding of their struggles, triumphs, and aspirations.
- Be part of a community of like-minded people: Volunteering provides an excellent platform for networking and engaging with the community. Through coming together with like-minded individuals you’ll have opportunities to build new friendships, professional relationships, and support networks.
- Feel happier: Numerous studies have shown that volunteering has a positive impact on overall wellbeing and happiness. Engaging in selfless acts triggers the release of endorphins, which improve mood and reduce stress levels. It also counteracts feelings of isolation and loneliness by fostering a sense of belonging and social connection.
So, as you can see, volunteering is a transformative journey that benefits not only those in need but also enriches our own lives in profound ways. By dedicating time to causes we care about, we can create a ripple effect of positive change in our communities. Whether it involves improving individuals’ lives or supporting social causes, the rewards of volunteering extend far beyond the act itself.
If you’re interested in a volunteering role where you’re able to interact with and support young people, there are many ways that you can get involved with the Aldridge Foundation and help change young lives. For example, you could share your career journey on our Futures Hub, a digital space that provides young people with opportunities to explore different careers and the possible routes into them. Or visit a school and deliver an inspiring talk or workshop. Perhaps you’d like to help a young person prepare for interviews or give them tips to enhance their cv? Maybe you’d like to support a young person over a longer period of time, through mentoring? There’s something for everyone.
What our volunteers are saying:
Volunteering for the Aldridge Foundation has brought me a real sense of pride and life satisfaction. Being able to share my skills and experience with young people helps me to feel like I am giving back to my community but also, knowing that I could have a positive impact on a young person’s future is incredibly rewarding.

What I love is that so much can be achieved with so little. As we progress in our working lives we diminish the value of our experience to the younger generations. Sharing an entrepreneurial journey, the ups and downs, the lessons learned, is mere words to us who’ve been there, but they might just be the spark that kindles the spirit in a young person to go on to achieve wonderful things.
